![]() Not that the rest of the books didn’t have some heavy stuff, this book just took on some different things. What I enjoyed most about this book was that it took on a very series turn of events which I really was not expecting. But I’m always so glad to see him come back. There was a short return of Jesse and every time he makes an appearance, my heart just breaks a little more for him. She found her place in this “new world” she was in and learned to embrace her gifts. ![]() ![]() But Sinclair and Abby gave us something so much better. In my head that looked something like what her life was before the accident that left her dead for 44 minutes. I was really hoping that Abby would finally be able to get her life back on track now that the worst parts were behind her. You cant help but feel sympathetic for her. Poor girl, she’s doing the best she can, but with not sleeping she was on the verge of having a mental breakdown. I feel so bad for her because of everything that she has been through and we are reminded just how much when we find out she hasn’t slept through the night since she left the island from the last book. The book starts with Abby trying to get her life back together. Of course I knew at the time that there are 13 books in the series, so I know there’s so much more to come with this series. ![]() Especially with how the 3rd book ended because I just felt like that was finally the end of what Abby was going through. This being the 4th book in the series, I really didn’t know what to expect. ![]() ![]() ![]() Everyone seemed more mellow than in previous books, which might have something to do with the events from Legion. All of the regular cast of characters makes an appearance, though some are fairly brief. Monster Hunter Siege doesn’t waste any time getting right into the action. On top of that, the portal to the Nightmare Realm is located on a remote island off the northern coast of Russia, so politics are involved. The mission must involve hundreds on monster hunters from around the globe to even stand a chance of being successful, so differences must be put aside. After finding out some of them may still be alive, Owen plans a rescue mission. MHI is still reeling from losing some of their people in the Nightmare Realm. Not that Larry Correia has been twiddling his thumbs the whole time, because he hasn’t, but it’s nice to get back to the main series with Monster Hunter Siege. ![]() ![]() Cover of “Monster Hunter Siege” by Larry Correia. It’s been a little over three years since the last book in the main Monster Hunter series was released. ![]() ![]() ![]() Okay so I loved the portrayal of class dynamics in this novel. And it's that found family that Sarah Thankam Mathews creates here, a beautiful vision of a better world built from the efforts of our society's strongest individuals: minorities. Not the whiny, woe-is-me trauma porn, but the real shit, the microaggressions that make you second-guess your sensitivity, the deeply engrained desire to succeed in the game of capitalism so your parents' sacrifices don't go to waste, the distinct feeling in your gut that you're out of place always - until you find a home. I've been looking for this book for a long time: a sensual, sharp, blithely funny bildungsroman that actually captures the spirit of the Asian American immigrant experience. not like all my choices are mortgaged to the people who have made my life possible" they get to feel like their lives belong only to them. like, the racist microagressions actually feel like microaggressions instead of "i got made fun of for eating stinky tofu", you know? it talks about what it's like to be asian american - that feeling of always being out of place without being explicitly out of place, the desire to be a good student and good worker and live up to what your parents came to america for - without whining or waxing poetic. it has texting that doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be ~relatable~ but definitely sounds like how zillennials text. ![]() i found a contemporary book about being a first-gen/immigrant asian american that i liked!!! and bonus: it's gay!!!!!!! ![]() ![]() ![]() A man with surveying equipment is spotted eating lunch near Pokiok Falls. Then an orange-tipped surveyor stake turns up in a farmer's field. What Ruby Carson saw during that fateful day was her entire town - buildings and people - floating underwater. But having a vision and narrating it to the assembled crowd solidifies your status as an outcast. Poussin offers his own lover, Gillette, as a model. He has been working on this future masterpiece that no one has yet seen for ten years. Although Frenhofer has mastered his technique, he admits that he has been unable to find a suitable model for his own masterpiece, which depicts a beautiful courtesan called Catherine Lescault, known as La Belle noiseuse. With some slight touches of the paintbrush, Frenhofer transforms Porbus' painting such that Mary the Egyptian appears to come alive before their very eyes. The painting is of Mary of Egypt, and while Frenhofer sings her praises, he hints that the work seems unfinished. He is accompanied by the old master Frenhofer, who comments expertly on the large tableau that Porbus has just finished.
